EDUCATION

Education can change lives!

We know that for every year of education a young girl has, her risks of maternal and infant mortality decrease, her future family earnings increase and she is less likely to become a child bride. (Studies have even shown the national GDP increases for every additional year of education for women.) All of these are important for empowering girls and reducing the risk of obstetric fistula, by allowing girls to be girls longer.

All over the world girls do not have access to the most basic of supplies. When a young girls reaches puberty, she may not know what has happened to her. Additionally, most do not have feminine hygiene items. Instead, she may use rags, grass or just have to squat over a hole in the ground. Rather than facing the shame and embarrassment of going to school during her period, she may begin missing school. This is often a signal to the parents that she should be married, thereby ending her childhood and making her more likely to have a child when she is still too young.

That is why the Protect Your Sister Project supports ways for girls to remain in school
